Ryosuke Toyama
B. in 1980, Tokyo
Currently based in kyoto, Japan
Ryosuke Toyama, is an experimental photographer deeply committed to exploring the nature of time, light, and human creativity. Grounded in classical photographic techniques, his work resists the disposability of the digital image era by reviving handcrafted methods such as calotypes, ambrotypes, and camera obscura installations.
As AI rapidly transforms creative fields, Toyama finds himself in a moment that echoes the 19th century—when painters were first confronted by the invention of photography. Just as those artists were compelled to redefine the role of painting, today’s creators face similar questions about the meaning and value of human-made work. Rather than resist this shift, Toyama quietly searches for expressions that remain uniquely human—subtle, irreplaceable, and beyond replication—continually probing the boundaries of what photography can be, and what only it can express in human hands.
This pursuit led to the invention of Tempusgraph, a photographic technique Toyama developed to capture the continuous flow of time on a single surface. Rather than freezing a single moment, Tempusgraph visualizes time as a seamless stream — where past, present, and future coalesce in a single frame. He applies this approach to projects such as his yearlong series 24 Solar Terms, inspired by the ancient rhythms of nature and Japan’s subtle seasonal shifts.
Toyama’s work is not just about image-making but about crafting objects of enduring presence — works that stand as both physical artifacts and poetic expressions of time. With each piece, he invites viewers to reflect on their connection to the natural world, to history, and to the generations yet to come.
